Germany head coach Joachim Loew will step down after the European Championship in July – DFB (German Football Federation)/AFP
The German FA said Thursday it will not rush into naming Joachim Loew’s replacement as head coach, while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has put forward former RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick.
Loew, 61, confirmed Tuesday he will step down as Germany coach after the European Championship, which is due to finish on July 11 with the final at Wembley.
At a press conference in Frankfurt on Thursday, Loew said it was “time for a change” and new ideas after nearly 15 years in charge.
Liverpool boss Klopp has already ruled himself out and suggested former Leipzig sports director Rangnick.
“Ralf Rangnick would be good. He would have been my first solution,” Klopp told reporters after Liverpool reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday.
Other candidates to replace Loew are Bayern Munich’s Champions League-winning coach Hansi Flick and Germany Under-21 boss Stefan Kuntz.
Rangnick, who masterminded Leipzig’s rise from the fifth tier of German football to the Bundesliga, has signalled his interest.
“It’s a job that leaves no one in Germany indifferent. At the moment I am free,” he told Sky.
Whoever replaces Loew will inherit a Germany team in transition.
The pinnacle of Loew’s career was winning the 2014 World Cup title in Brazil.
However, Germany have struggled over the last three years, crashing out of the group stage at the World Cup in Russia and then suffering a 6-0 hammering by Spain in the Nations League last November.
Germany team director Oliver Bierhoff ruled out the possibility of a foreign coach leading the national team for the first time.
“I see little chance for a foreign coach. As the German national team, we should have a German coach,” said Bierhoff.
“We have good German coaches here and abroad.
“We have absolutely no time pressure. It’s an important decision,” added Bierhoff who made it clear he will not comment on speculation.
“It is an important decision and we will take the necessary time.”
Loew also refused to confirm reports he will recall Mats Hummels and Thomas Mueller for the Euros, where Germany face France and Portugal in their group.
His decision in March 2019 to end the international careers of the experienced Mueller, Hummels and Jerome Boateng quickly backfired.
The assured performances of Mueller and Boateng last term helped Bayern Munich win the Champions League title, and led to Loew constantly having to defend his decision to sideline them from the national set-up.
The Presidency, on Thursday, released a video showing the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), ordering security agents to shoot on sight, any civilian seen with AK-47 rifle.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said on March 3, 2021 that his principal gave specific orders to military commanders to shoot any civilian bearing AK-47 rifle.
While some Nigerians including Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, had commended the President for issuing the order, other persons like the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, said Buhari should have handed down the order himself.
Perhaps to dissipate doubt, the Presidency through its official Twitter handle, @NGRPresident, on Thursday, released a 14-second video clip showing the President issuing the order.
In the clip, the President said, “Anybody with AK-47 should be shot because AK-47 is supposed to be registered and it is only given to security officials.”
Of late, there have been serious concerns over the activities of AK-47-brandishing herdsmen terrorising parts of the country, especially the South-West zone.
The Benue State governor and his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed, had clashed recently on whether herders should wield AK-47 or not. Mohammed had said the herders use the rifles for self-defence while Ortom disagreed that the herders use the weapons to wreak havoc on host communities. The two governor of the Peoples Democratic Party, however, resolved the issue and embraced peace.

National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.)
National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.), says the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is not interested in negotiation with bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements terrorising the country.
According to the NSA, dialogue with insurgents paints the government as weak and incapable, adding that the Buhari regime won’t hesitate to use maximum force on the insurgents.
Monguno spoke on Thursday at a State House Briefing in Aso Villa, Abuja.
He said, “The government is tackling the problem of insecurity, we’ve said this many times that there are two phases in solving this problem –the soft approach: talking, negotiating, and so on and so forth.
“While the government is not averse to talking to these entities, these human beings, I have to be very honest, the government has to apply its weight, that force that is required because you can’t even talk with people who are unreliable, who will turn out to do a different thing and people who will continue to hurt the society.
“So, basically, what the government wants to rely upon is to deal with this issue by using all the assets – military assets, intelligence assets to eliminate these people.
“If along the line, some of them are ready to come out and talk and negotiate, when the time comes, we will do that but for now, we can’t keep on dwelling on ‘Let’s dialogue’.
“Psychologically, it is not even good for us, it paints the picture of weakness, it paints the picture of incapacity and I, just like the governor of Kaduna State said, do not see any reason why we cannot, with what we have, deal with these elements.
“These are not people who are looking for anything that is genuine (or) legitimate; these are people who are just out to perform atrocities, to take calculated measures to inflict pain, violence on people.
“At the slightest opportunity, they go haywire. And so, it is important for us to realise that we are dealing with people who are not looking for anything, people who without provocation will give birth to their homicidal instincts. We must deal with them the way they have to be dealt with.”
Leo messi after a draw with PSG leading to a defeat on aggregate, 10, march 2021
Lionel Messi scored one stunning goal but then had a penalty saved as Barcelona failed in their attempt to produce a second Champions League comeback for the ages against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, a 1-1 draw taking the French side through to the quarter-finals 5-2 on aggregate.
Kylian Mbappe had netted a hat-trick as PSG stunned Barca 4-1 in the first leg last month, and he extended their advantage in this last-16 tie by netting a first-half penalty in the second leg to put last season’s runners-up ahead on the night
But Messi made it 1-1 with a ferocious strike from 30 metres and the Argentine had the chance to put the visitors ahead after Antoine Griezmann was fouled in the area, only for the outstanding Keylor Navas to tip his spot-kick onto the bar.
Barcelona certainly went for it, but there was to be no repeat of their infamous recovery against the same opponents at the same stage four years ago, when they lost the first leg 4-0 but triumphed 6-1 in the return.
Their coach Ronald Koeman will nevertheless be encouraged by the way his team played on a cold, wet and windy night at an empty Parc des Princes.
Barcelona have been a club in crisis for some time but they have a new president in Joan Laporta, who will hope to restore calm at boardroom level, and they can still hope to finish the season strongly domestically.
Meanwhile PSG are, in the end, safely through to the quarter-finals as they look to go one better than last season and win the Champions League for the first time.
They will feel this tie marks another step forward in their quest to become Europe’s dominant force, after three defeats at Barcelona’s hands in knockout ties since the Qatar Sports Investments takeover of a decade ago.
– Mbappe’s tie –
Victory was achieved despite Neymar missing both legs due to injury, with Mbappe providing enough stardust on his own.
Yet after lighting up the first leg, the French World Cup winner found the going tougher in the return, and coach Mauricio Pochettino will face some questions about his side’s approach.
A repeat of 2017 might have seemed impossible, but there were jitters, with Barcelona dominating almost from the first minute and squandering chance after chance in the opening half-hour.
Poor decision-making from Ousmane Dembele did not help the away side, although the Frenchman also saw one ball across the face of goal just escape the outstretched leg of Messi.
As an impromptu fireworks display broke out just outside the stadium, Navas then produced his first superb save midway through the first half when he turned Sergino Dest’s shot onto the frame of goal, and it was against the run of play that PSG took the lead.
Clement Lenglet just caught the heel of Mauro Icardi in the area in the 28th minute, a foul that was almost invisible on first viewing but was confirmed by English referee Anthony Taylor after a VAR review.
Mbappe made no mistake from the spot for his fourth goal in the tie and his 26th of the season altogether.
Barcelona kept coming though, and Messi equalised with a shot from range that was like a tracer bullet that whistled into the top corner, not the kind of goal the Argentine scores often.
It was his 25th this season, and he could have scored again in first-half stoppage time as Layvin Kurzawa was penalised for catching Griezmann in the box.
However, Messi was denied by Navas, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper dousing Barcelona’s hopes as he continued to do in the second half.
The five-time champions kept pushing after the restart, but Navas notably saved well from a near-post header by Sergio Busquets, allowing PSG to earn a draw on the night that they scarcely deserved but a win on aggregate that was always likely after the first leg.

EFCC Chairman Testifies In ₦1.4bn Oil Subsidy Trial Shola Soyele Updated March 10, 2021
The trial of Abubakar Ali Peters and his company, Nadabo Energy Limited, for an alleged ₦1.4bn fraud continued on Wednesday before Justice Christopher Balogun of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.
During today’s sitting, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, made history as the first chairman of the Commission to give evidence in Court.
Bawa, who is testifying as the fifth prosecution witness, PW5, had begun his examination-in-chief on June 3, 2015, long before his appointment as the EFCC Chairman.
Before today’s proceedings, Bawa had given evidence against the defendants, who pleaded “not guilty” to the alleged fraud, stating that Nababo Energy Limited allegedly obtained the sum of ₦1,464,961,978.24 from the Federal Government as oil subsidy with forged documents.
The new EFCC boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa, addresses journalists after a court session in Lagos on March 10, 2021. Bawa had also told the Court that, after studying the documents submitted to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) where the defendants claimed they imported about 14,000 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the EFCC conducted an investigation which revealed the contrary.
“Contrary to the claim of the defendants as par Exhibit B, which they submitted to PPPRA to claim subsidy, the defendant imported only 4,850 metric tonnes of PMS as opposed to 14,000 metric tonnes that he claimed to have imported,” Bawa had said.
At the last sitting on February 23, 2021, Justice Balogun had admitted in evidence an email correspondence between Bawa and Ullrich Afini Awani of Global Commodities African as well as the Certificate of Identification.
The house of Sunday Adeyemi ‘Igboho’, the man at the centre of the recent eviction controversy in Oyo State, was set ablaze in the early hours of Tuesday.
Confirming the incident today, the Oyo State Police Command said it received a distress call about the fire around 6 am.
The distress report said some unidentified hoodlums had attacked Igboho’s house in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Efforts are on to get to the root of the matter, police spokesman Gbenga Fadeyi said.
At about 0620 hrs of today 26/01/2021, report was received at Santo Police Station that some unidentified hoodlums came to Sunday Igboho’s house at SOKA area of Ibadan in a Hummer bus and Micra firing sporadically, and set the house ablaze,” the police statement said.
Mr Sunday Igboho’s house was engulfed in flames on January 26, 2021.
“The mini sitting room got burnt in the process while amount of other properties is yet to be estimated
“Immediately the DPO Sanyo got wind of the incident, he contacted Fire service while he also went to the scene for on the spot assessment.
“The fire was eventually put out.
“Investigation has commenced into the incident while the Police is on the trail of the hoodlums.”
Mr. Igboho, an Oyo indigene, has been a prominent figure in the recent tensions between herders and the local community in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State.
He had allegedly issued an eviction notice to the herders over allegations of kidnappings, killings, rape, and other violent activities.
The ultimatum expired last week and Igboho held a massive rally in the community after which some houses and properties in the herder’s settlements were torched, according to the police.
On Monday, South-West leaders met with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to “find lasting solutions to the incessant killings, kidnapping, and crises between herdsmen and farmers in the Southwest geo-political zone of the country.”
After the meeting, all parties agreed to ban night grazing and under-age herding.
The illegal occupation of State Forest Reserves was also condemned at the meeting.
Igboho Reacts Speaking on Tuesday after the house went up in flames, Igboho said property worth N50 million has been lost to the inferno.
He said the arsonists broke the gate to the building to gain entrance before setting the house on fire.
He added that the two people living in the house fled for their lives in the chaos.
Igboho also stressed that he was not a political thug available for hire.
“Around 03:30 am this morning, my siblings living in my old house came to alert me that some hoodlums were at the house, shooting sporadically, and that they had forced the gate open and set the house ablaze,” he said.
“My siblings escaped unhurt but my house was burnt. When we got there, the hoodlums had escaped so we called the fire service to put out the fire.
“I am surprised that some Yoruba people could be supporting killer herdsmen to destroy my house. This saddens me.
“My agitations are for all of us to come together against killer herdsmen who have been terrorizing the Yorubas by kidnapping, killing our brothers, and raping our women in Yoruba Land.
“To my amazement, some Yoruba people are aiding these killer herdsmen. I expected them to come and attack my residence where I live now to show that they mean business.
“I assure you if they had, I would have been able to give you evidence of the hoodlums that did this.
“The property destroyed in that inferno would not be less than fifty million.”
