COVID-19: Nigeria releases N10 bn for vaccine production

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks and increased mortality.

The Ministry of Finance has released N10 billion to support COVID-19 vaccine production in the country, an official has said.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, made the disclosure at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) COVID-19 briefing on Monday in Abuja.

Mr Ehanire said: “The Ministry of Finance has released N10 billion to support domestic vaccine production.

“While we are working to develop our own vaccines, Nigeria is exploring options for licensed production, in collaboration with recognised institutions. We are also exploring the option of local production of the vaccines in the country.”

He urged Nigerians to ignore claims by some people that they had COVID-19 vaccines for sale in the country.

“I advise all citizens to disregard these claims, as they are criminal. There are procedures for vaccine acquisition and use, which include appropriate regulations and certification by National Agency for Food and Drug and Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“I advise against fake vaccines, as there is no one approved for use in the country. The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) is the only authorised vaccine administrator in Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Ehanire stated that the number of new COVID-19 cases has continued to rise in the country, such that 10,300 confirmed cases were reported from just 50,750 samples tested in one week, translating into 20 percent positivity rate.

“It means one out of every five persons tested in the last one week turned out positive, compared with the previous week which recorded a positivity rate of 14 percent.

END SPECIAL ANTI-ROBBERY SQUAD (SARS)

End Special Anti-Robbery Squad (END SARS) is a social campaign in Nigeria opposing the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit of the Nigerian Police Force.[1] It is a call to end police oppression and brutality in Nigeria. The campaign started as a social media campaign using the hashtag #ENDSARS to demand for Nigeria’s government to scrap and end the deployment of Nigeria Police Force Special Anti-Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS.[2][3][4] Nigerians have shared stories of how members of SARS engaged in kidnapping, murder, theft, rape, torture, unlawful arrests, high-handedness, humiliation, unlawful detention, and extortion.

SARS officers profile youths based on appearance. They conduct illegal road blocks, ‘stop and search’, they operate without search warrants. Basically, they would harass, oppress, and extort innocent Nigerian Youths if the person dresses nicely, uses/use expensive gadgets such as iPhones and drive expensive cars such as Mercedes Benz. If found wearing expensive kicks such as Nike or Adidas, you could potentially be arrested and termed a fraudster. They arrest people who have piercings, tattoos, dreadlocks, gold chains etc Meanwhile a lot of SARS operatives have also been seen on dreadlocks, piercings and tattoos. They feel intimidated by the success of the Youth and they try their possible best to attack, murder, extort, abuse, torture and annihilate the citizens of Nigeria, both male and female alike.

Consolidated results of voting published by the organisers of Big Brother Naija reality TV show on Thursday showed that the race for the top prize between Laycon and Erica Nlewedim, who many said could have won, was not really close.

Erica was disqualified from the show after three strikes – her last strike came after raining a barrage of insults on Laycon and for the violation of other house rules.

DStv said more than 900 million votes were recorded during the 10 weeks the show lasted.

Laycon eventually won the show’s top prize, which included N30 million cash prize, a luxury two-bedroom flat, an Innoson SUV and others.

He beat other finalists – Dorathy, Nengi, Neo and Vee – in the last round of voting, amassing a total of 60% of the votes.

Results published on Africa Magic website showed that Laycon did not just win the final round. He was top every time he was up for eviction, including the weeks he was up for eviction with Erica. Both of them had a chummy relationship which later turned sour.

In the first round of voting, Laycon got 24.28% of the votes, beating Erica who got 15.60% by 8.68%.

The gap further widened to 10.35% in the second round of voting with Laycon topping the poll with 26.55% and Erica trailing in the second place with 16.20%

In the fourth round of voting when they were both nominated for eviction again, Erica cut slightly into Laycon’s dominance but nothing enough to give the eventual winner headache. In that round, Laycon got 25.06% of the votes while Erica 17.28%, a difference of 7.78%.

In the fifth round which was the last time they were both nominated for eviction, Laycon widened the gap with 8.88% by topping the vote with 24.97%, with Erica scoring 16.09% of the votes.

The published result will possibly end the debate on social media on whether Erica could have snatched the prizes away from Laycon.
